Hi Kathy! The dreaded billable hour was my first thought too... It's such a tough issue and causes a lot of unintended consequences. I'd love to see firms actually retire the model. Plenty pay the idea lip service to the idea, but I'd be shocked if it ever actually happened!

The book is great, and you'll definitely enjoy it. BTW, the pricing on Amazon was really cheap when I looked last! Hope you're surviving all the snow!

All I could think about was the billable hour structure, the ultimate in the carrot/stick approach. It's so hard to be motivated when the primary metric by which you're judged---time in---does not line up with your (my) motivations for work, like problem-solving, challenging myself, developing my skills. You can be great at the job yet a total failure by the metrics that count. Hard to be motivated under those conditions! I will have to check out this book.

Thanks for the comment, Walter. I think you're right that motivation can differ from one person to another, but there are also some surprising commonalities in what motivates all of us - a job well done, progress on a big project, and bettering our own lives!

Motivation varies from person to person, but their common denominator is that it is rooted deep in one's self. The current trend for motivation is, as you have stated here, do more harm than good. I believe that motivation is something that inspires us to pursue on something that will give inspiration unto our lives. Without this reward of inspiration, any method of motivation will just not work. :-)
